Santorini is one of the best known Cycladic island. It differs from all the other greek islands because of the geological morphology, the result of action by a volcano now dormant. Santorini was formed in a massive volcanic eruption, giving way to some stunning scenery.
The black sand and peddle beaches along its east coast offer beautiful clear water and are great for water sports and swimming. |
The Western coast has dramatically towering cliffs which plunge into the sea. Santorini’s 14 villages have their own specific character, while all together create the unique atmosphere of the islands.
OIA, pronounced ‘Ia’, is the most famous and picturesque village of Santorini. Situated 11 km to the north of Fira town, it is known throughout the world for its quiet life and fantastic sunsets. Lying 200 m above sealevel, Oia nestles romantically in the islands craggy coastline. The unique appeal of the village lies in its cave-houses excavated in the rocks, its neoclassical mansions with their courtyards, its narrow paved alleys, and its blue domed churches. The pedestrian street offers plenty of tourist shops, galleries, taverns, cafés and restaurants. 214 steps below is the small beach of Ammoudi with its famous fish-tavernas and Armeni beach is 286 steps below.
The Youth Hostel Oia is located only about 3 minutes walk from the central bus-station and very close to the central town-square and the pedestrian street. (See also frequently asked questions) |
